Rota is a very small town in Spain. It is famous for its fruits and vegetables. In particular, it is famous for its tomatoes and pumpkins.

One would think that the soil of this region must be very good. It must be very rich in order to grow such excellent tomatoes and pumpkins. But the soil is not good. It is poor. It is only sand and rock — nothing more. The winds of the ocean blow hard. They have carried away the good soil. They have left only sand in its place. There is also little water. The soil is dry and hard.

The farmers of this region have to work very hard. They work from morning till night. They dig wells wherever there is water. They carry water by hand to their gardens. They use anything and everything to make the soil a little richer around each plant. They cover the young plants with leaves. In this way they protect them from the sun and wind. They watch each plant carefully. They watch the plants which are not strong. They give these plants more water and more attention. They show the plants the same affection they show for their wives or children.

There is a proverb about Rota farmers: the farmer of Rota touches each tomato plant at least forty times a day.

2、I choose for my subject faith wrought into life, apart from creed or dogma.

“i cannot think of a better way to spread the faith. no thundering from a pulpit,no condemnation from bad churches,no peer pressure, just a book of scripture quietly waiting to say hello,as gentle and powerful as a little girl’s kiss on your cheek.”(chapter 73,pg 230).

“despair was a heavy blackness that let no light in or out. it was a hell beyond expression. i thank god it always passed. a school of fish appeared around the net or a knot cried out to be reknotted. or i thought of my family,of how they were spared this terrible agony. the blackness would stir and eventually go away, and god would remain,a shining point of light in my heart. i would go on loving.”(chapter 74,pg 232)

there are also life of pi quotes that are inspirational and have become popularly used even beyond the fans of the book, such as the following life of pi quotes regarding faith and fear:

“i must say a word about fear. it is life’s only true opponent. only fear can defeat life.”(chapter 56,pg 178)

“if you stumble at mere believability, what are you living for?isn’t love hard to believe?”(chapter 99,pg 330)

“the reason death sticks so closely to life isn’t biological necessity-it’s envy. life is so beautiful that death has fallen in love with it,a jealous, possessive love that grabs at what it can. but life leaps over oblivion lightly, losing only a thing or two of no importance, and gloom is but the passing shadow of a cloud.”(chapter 1,pg 6)

For years I wanted a flower garden. Id spend hours thinking of different things I could plant that would look nice together.

But then we had Matthew. And Marvin. And the twins, Alisa and Alan. And then Helen. Five children. I was too busy raising them to grow a garden.

Money was tight, as well as time. Often when my children were little, one of them would want something that cost too much, and Id have to say, "Do you see a money tree outside? Money doesnt grow on trees, you know."

Finally, all five got through high school and college and were off on their own. I started thinking again about having a garden.

I wasnt sure, though. I mean, gardens do cost money, and after all these years I was used to living on a pretty lean(贫乏的) , no-frills budget.

Then, one spring morning, on Mothers Day, I was working in my kitchen. Suddenly, I realized that cars were tooting(吹奏,狂欢) their horns as they drove by. I looked out the window and there was a new tree, planted right in my yard. I thought it must be a weeping willow(垂柳) , because I saw things blowing around on all its branches. Then I put my glasses on - and I couldnt believe what I saw. There was a money tree in my yard!

I went outside to look. It was true! There were dollar bills, one hundred of them, taped all over that tree. Think of all the garden flowers I could buy with one hundred dollars! There was also a note attached:"IOU eight hours of digging time. Love, Marvin."

Marvin kept his promise, too. He dug up a nice ten-by-fifteen foot bed for me. And my other children bought me tools, ornaments(装饰品) , a trellis(格子,框架) , a sunflower stepping stone and gardening books.

That was three years ago. My gardens now very pretty, just like I wanted. When I go out and weed(除草,铲除) or tend my flowers, I dont seem to miss my children as much as I once did. It feels like theyre right there with me.

I live up in Michigans Upper Peninsula, where winters are long and cold, and summers are way too short. But every year now, when winter sets in, I look out my window and think of the flowers Ill see next spring in my little garden. I think about what my children did for me, and I get tears in my eyes - every time.

Im still not sure that money grows on trees. But I know love does!

Wherever you are, and whoever you may be, there is one thing in which you and I are just alike at this moment, and in all the moments of our existence. We are not at rest; we are on a journey.

Our life is a movement, a tendency, a steady ceaseless progress toward an unseen goal. We are gaining something, or losing something, everyday. Even when our position and our character seem to remain precisely the same, they are changing. For the mere advance of time is a change. It is not the same thing to have a bare field in January and in July. The season makes the difference. The limitations that are childlike in the children are childish in the man.

Everything that we do is a step in one direction or another. Even the failure to do something is in itself a deed. It sets us forward or backward. The action of the negative pole of a magnetic needle is just as real as the action of the positive pole. To decline is to accept -- the other alternative.

Are you nearer to your port today than you were yesterday? Yes, -- you must be a little nearer to some port or other; for since your ship was first launched upon the sea of life, you have never been still for a single moment; the sea is too deep, and you could not find an anchorage if you would; there can be no pause until you come into port.

Nearly everybody has a creek in his past, a confiding waterway that rose in the spring of youth.…….

My creek wound between Grandfathers apricot orchard and a neighbors hillside pasture. It banks were shaded by cottonwoods and redwood trees and a thick tangle of blackberries and wild grapevines. On hot summer days the quiet water flowed clear and cold over gravel bars where I fished for trout. Nothing historic ever happens in these recollected creeks. But their persistence in memory suggests that creeks are bigger than they seem, more a part of our hearts and minds than mighty rivers.

Creek time is measured in the lives of strange creatures, in sandflecked caddis worms under the rocks, sudden gossamer clouds of mayflies in the afternoon, or minnows of darting like silvers of inspiration into the dimness of creek fate. Mysteries float in creeks riffles, crawl over their pebbled bottoms and slink under the roots of trees.

While rivers are heavy with sophistication and sediment, creeks are clear, innocent, boisterous, full of dream and promise. A child can wade across them without a parents cautions. You can go it along, jig for crayfish, swing from ropes along the bank. Creeks belong to childhood, drawing you into the wider world, teaching you the curve of the earth.
